Abstract. Washout biomass is limiting factor to detergent biodegradation in industrial waste water treatment due to foaming and surfactant biocide effect, which can be overcome by selecting suitable immobilization media for supporting microbial attachment and growth, which incase, in semi-continuous operation. The purpose of this work was to investigate linear alkylbenzenesulfonate removal as word’s commercial detergent formula using immobilized detergent degrading bacteria. Cells were adsorbed on porous zeolite which is modified with activated carbon-cement, activated carbon-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), or sintered. Bioreactor containing immobilized bacteria on PVAactivated carbon modified zeolite shows two times higher removal efficiency among others, and SEM image shows bacterial colonization covering its crystal structure after 15 days. Material adsorption and toxicity effect to formed biofilm and LAS removal were further investigated. PVA coated activated carbon-zeolite make proper characteristic not only for easier bacterial attachment but also facilitated LAS uptake as carbon and energy source for faster biofilm development. Facilitated cell adhesion and resistance to sloughing on zeolites and activated carbon by the PVA coating has the potential to be applied in cell immobilization technology for bioconversion processes of toxic reactants besides surfactants.
